The Garthwaites I am descended from lived in the Soothill / Hanging Heaton area of Batley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The earliest Garthwaite to move into the area, in my direct family tree, was George Senior Garthwaite. George was born in Thornhill on 10th October 1845, son of George and Jane Garthwaite.
He moved to Dewsbury around 1870 and on to Soothill, Batley at some point between 1881 and 1885.
This map below shows Batley and Dewsbury. Hanging Heaton, with it's church St Pauls and Soothill are slightly right of centre.
There are a couple of Garthwaite gravestones in Hanging Heaton St Pauls' churchyard I found during a visit early in 2006.
