I have only ordered a small number of General Registration records to confirm an ancestor's parents or the maiden name of their wife. To view a certificate please click one of the names listed. I have transcribed the general registration indices from 1837 to 1901, they are arranged in tables on the births and marriages pages. The deaths have been transcribed from 1837 to 1983.

A letter received by my father some years ago, relating to Garthwaite family history in the Thornhill area of West Yorkshire, is displayed to the right
A scan of the original letter is to the right:
Dear Mr Garthwaite,
I have been researching the Garthwaite family history and as it is an uncommon name it is likely that we are all distantly related. Therefore I am taking the liberty of circulating all the Garthwaites in the local telephone directories hoping that either you have done some similar research and can help, or that you find my own discoveries interesting.
I have in my possession two family Bibles. One I have used to trace a direct line of descent for myself, with the help of census and baptismal records, but I am puzzled as to how the other Bible came into my family as I have not been able to trace any relationship so far.
Bible No.1 Handwritten in the book:
Hannah born 1799 - Died 1882 at Harrogate.
Ann born 1802
Joseph born 1804 - Became a cornmiller in Thornhill. Married Sarah, son George who married Ann. Died 1891.
Sarah born 1807
Matthew born 1809 - Trained as a weaver
George born 1812 - Married Jane. Died 1878.
Mary born 1814
Maria born 1817
John born 1819 - Married Maria. My Great Grandfather.
William born 1824 - Died aged 17 years.
The father of these ten children was John Garthwaite, a weaver of broadcloth, born 1771, died 1847. His wife was Mary, possibly Asquith, born 1781, died 1851. They lived at Netherton (Shitlington area) of Thornhill Parish, near Wakefield.
The John Garthwaite born 1819 became a brewer at Calder Grove, Crigglestone and had six Children of whom John was my grandfather. He was also a brewer and later farmed at Blacker Hall Farm, Calder Grove. My cousin John Moorhouse (Jack) Garthwaite still lives at Blacker Hall Farm and his son John, who lives at Broadcut Farm, farms Blacker Hall land. He has a son, Edward.
Bible No.2 This bible is very smartly bound in brown suede and has a printed leather plaque inside the front cover stating:
George and Jane Garthwaite Book
Houses Hill, Kirkheaton 1837
Inside the back cover, also printed on leather is a list of their twelve children:
Henry born 1817
Elizabeth born 1819
Mary Ann born 1821
Nanny born 1823
Joseph born 1824
John born 1826
Sarah born 1828
Edwin born 1829
William born 1833
Robert born 1836
George born 1837
I am intending to try to get further back and I hope you might find this interesting. If it bores you, you can always throw it away!
Yours Sincerely, Jean M. Garthwaite

Highthorpe is no longer listed as an area of Mirfield, but after researching old maps it appears to be a group of 3-4 houses off Slipper Lane to the north of Mirfield. After viewing the area on Google Maps it appears the houses are still there.
